The Favourite Game Boy Vikki Walker

I don't play that many games. I used to play a few when I was a kid (hence all the N64 games), but just sort of dabbled occasionally in the odd small indie game since. Trying to catch up with some big ones I've missed or tried once and got bored after 5 minutes.

A collection of memories of Joey Moss from the Moss family

Joseph (Joey) Neil Moss was born with Down syndrome at the General Hospital in Edmonton on Sept. 25, 1963, as number 12 of 13 children. Born into a musical family, Joey became very familiar with the stage as, at the tender age of three, he and his 11 older siblings “took the show on the road” performing as the Alaskan Highway Birthquakes. Playing the tambourine and singing at the top of his lungs, it wasn’t long before the adorable three-year-old got the crowds going and the accolades pouring in. It was during those early years that Joey discovered he possessed a gift that made people happy.

Joey graduated from Winnifred Stewart School at 16 and began working at a bottle depot. Even though he was always responsible, it was this event that propelled Joey into becoming an independent young man. Not only did he need to be accountable, but also had to navigate several bus transfers to get there. Observing Joey’s determination to get to work on time as well as his outstanding work ethic, we were confident he was going to succeed in life.

Thanks to his good friend Wayne Gretzky, in 1984 Joey began his 36-year career with the Edmonton Oilers as the dressing room attendant. Soon news of Joey’s hard work ethic got around which led to him being drafted by the Edmonton Football Team to work the summers starting in 1986. At both professional sporting clubs, Joey’s official duties included cleaning the dressing rooms, team laundry, folding towels, filling water bottles for games and practices, and the distribution of equipment.

It wasn’t long before everyone recognized Joey’s infectious positive spirit which quickly infiltrated the fabric of the sport culture. Known for pulling pranks and telling silly jokes, it was Joey’s unconditional love that made the powerful impact. He became the players’ friend and confidant.

What many do not know is that Joey volunteered with the Edmonton Police Service’s Lifestyle Camp. Additionally, he was the special guest or ambassador to dozens of events in the city every year. Recognized for his efforts in professional sports as well, Joey was the recipient of many awards throughout the country, including: the NHL Seventh Man All Star Award (2003), Services for Persons with Disabilities Award (2007), Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Award (2012), Induction in the Alberta Sports Hall of Fame (2015), Marlin Styner Award (2015), Induction in the Hall of Fame for Professional Hockey Athletic Trainers Society (2017), and the Joey Moss Literary Centre for Excellence Edmonton Down Syndrome Society (2018).

Joey had a love for movies. He could recite Rockys one through four, and re-enact all of the boxing scenes. Perhaps his favourite were James Bond movies. He had every VHS, and recorded VHS, DVD, and Blu-ray, and boy, did he love the soundtrack! He was known to put on headphones and belt out “Goldfinger,” making family road trips feel excruciatingly long. Joey also loved watching wrestling videos and was very excited to meet his hero, Hulk Hogan. Even a hero has heroes. Other Joey favourites: mustard, hot dogs, beer, a box of Old Dutch chips — regular, cologne, bocce ball, singing, funny slippers, La Bamba, and rubbing backs. He was a very affectionate and compassionate man.

As a person with Down syndrome, Joey was an inspiration to parents of children with disabilities across North America. He was an active member in the community and helped pave the way for people with disabilities to not only be accepted, but also be contributing members in the workplace and society.

A few years ago, Joey was diagnosed with early onset dementia. While dancing at home in July 2020, he fell and broke his hip. But Joey’s love of life didn’t end there. Lying on the ambulance stretcher, Joey laughed and flirted with the female attendant and blew kisses to everyone as they were strapping him in. On Oct. 26, 2020 Joey passed away peacefully from natural causes with his family by his side.

The Moss family would like to send their thanks and gratitude to the staff of the Royal Alexandra Hospital and the Winnifred Stewart Foundation for all of their support and care.

Joey is predeceased by his mother (Sophie) and father (Lloyd), his aunt Mary, and brothers Mervin, Jimmy and Stephen. He is survived by brothers and sisters Terry, Pattie, Michael, Tim, Susie, Freddy, Mark, Barbie, Vikki and his 23 nieces and nephews.

The family is overjoyed by all the love, support, and precious stories that are being shared across the country. Seeing downtown Edmonton light up in orange, blue, green and gold was like a page out of one of Joey’s favourite songs, “Maybe someday your name will be in lights saying Joey B. Goode tonight. Go Joey Go.”

Vikki Moss is Joey Moss’s sister. Adam Walker is Joey Moss’s nephew and Kim Walker is Adam’s wife.

With 14 nominations, including Best Picture, the dark comedy film “The Favourite” (about Great Britain’s Queen Anne and two women who compete for her affections) is the top nominee for the 24th Annual Critics’ Choice Awards, which will be presented at the Barker Hangar in Santa Monica, California, on January 13, 2019. The CW network will have the U.S. telecast of the show. The awards are voted for by the Broadcast Television Journalists Association and the Broadcast Television Journalists Association.

Following close behind in nominations is the superhero flick “Black Panther,” which has 12 nods; the astronaut drama “First Man,” which received 10 nominations; the 2018 remake of “A Star Is Born,” the musical sequel “Mary Poppins Returns” and the dark political comedy “Vice,” which have nine nominations each; the Spanish-language drama “Roma,” which picked up eight nods; and the race-relations drama “Green Book,” which has seven nominations. All of these films, along with the African-American dramas “BlacKkKlansman” and “If Beale Street Could Talk,” are in the running for Best Picture.

Most of the film nominees have received nominations at other prominent award shows. However, there were some noticeable snubs: Lucas Hedges for “Boy Erased” or “Ben Is Back”; Julia Roberts for “Ben Is Back”; Lin-Manuel Miranda for “Mary Poppins Returns”; and Sam Rockwell for “Vice.” The biggest surprise nominations were for the dark comedy “Sorry to Bother You,” which received two nods: Best Comedy and Best Actor in a Comedy (for Lakeith Stanfield). The movie has been critically acclaimed but had been shut out of other major awards nominations so far.

In the TV field, the leading nominees (with five each) are the spy drama series “The Americans” and the true-crime miniseries “The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story” and “Escape at Dannemora.” Many of the nominees are the same who received Emmy and Golden Globe nominations for 2018. However, noticeable snubs include “The Handmaid’s Tale” for Best Drama Series; Benedict Cumberbatch of “Patrick Melrose” for Best Actor in a Limited Series or Movie Made for Television; Sterling K. Brown of “This Is Us” for Best Actor in a Drama Series; Alison Brie of “GLOW” for Best Actress in a Comedy Series; and Édgar Ramírez of “The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story” for Best Supporting Actor in a Limited Series or Movie Made for Television. Surprise nominations include “Schitt’s Creek” and “The Middle” getting nominated for Best Comedy Series, instead of previous Critics’ Choice nominees “GLOW” and “Orange Is the New Black.”

Here is the complete list of nominees for the 2019 Critics’ Choice Awards.
